Growth Form: Shrubs or small trees, rarely lianas.

Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnate) or rarely simple (but not in Hawaiian taxa). Alternate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary or terminal panicles. Flowers typically with bisexual (perfect) and unisexual flowers, plants monoecious. Calyx of (4)5(6) persistent sepals. Corolla of 5 petals; petals imbricate in bud. Stamens 5. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule 1; styles 2–3.

Fruit: Drupes subglobose or compressed. Seeds with an oily embryo; 1; on a basal stalk.
